The Great Battle
It had been a cold day to go outside, and with luck, I couldn't go to school anymore. On the other hand, I had an innumerable amount of chores to
complete for my mom and my really dirty home. While I had been doing my chores, I had no clue that a little fight had been brewing. Believe me, when a teenager
has his/ her mind set on something, he/ she will do it without getting off focus. Compared to me, I had been set in my mind to finish my chores so that I could
have the rest of the time to do my own things. I wouldn't take a break until I knew that my job there was done. Suddenly, there was a loud knock on our cottage
door which almost froze me in fear.
Usually, my whole family would remain in the cottage on such a day like today, Sunday, and only the children could have friends, as the rest of the
population was busy in other categories. Sadly, none of them were allowed to come over to my family’s home because my parents had believed it was a waste of
time to have your friends to come over. Now, this knock was unknown throughout our peaceful home, so my dad went to open the door to see who the stranger
was that was bothering us at such a time during that joyful weekend. It had been a soldier, which had scared me so much that I felt as if the devious devil was
right in front of my face. As the man had whispered a few sentences into my father’s ears, his smile rose and fell as if there were good news and some really bad
news. My mom began to worry when she had seen my father begin to tear up. After the conversion with the soldier was finished, he called me and my sister up,
but later told my sister to go sit back down. From that point on, I had had no clue that my life had been put in danger by a stranger who seemed to have
appeared out of nowhere.
Many years ago, there had been a huge conflict between blacks and whites. Now, I had been called in my brother’s place to fight in a war pretending that I
was a man. After the conversation between my dad and the soldier had finished, I was taken away to fight in a conflict I had never participated in, which caused
me a lot of frustration to think of what action I should take to cave myself from at such a time. Right at the moment I had been taken away from my family, I
had decided that I would escape on the sly so that the soldiers and the boss wouldn't I left, but would think that I had been killed by a spy from the opponent.
This way, they would never come back to my innocent family ever again.
My extreme plan was only to wait till night while everyone was asleep quietly at camp and return home in the darkness of the night as not to be seen. The
journey back home from this huge camp would take approximately 3-4 hours. As of course, this plan is not so much that extreme but I had been betting myself
that no other teenager would think of what I had thought of at that time. Now, if I fast forward to 3 days before the war at night, you could hear a faint sound of
someone walking down the stairs so quietly that only a bat with a keen sense of echolocation would find out that I was escaping from a treacherous camp that
could only teach me how to put an end to my life through violence and war. At that point, all that I knew was that it would be a long journey home, like walking
from the tip of a mountain all the way back down to the ground.
After 3 hours of constant walking, I finally reached my cold cottage. Something really important had been taken away from the home, like the happiness
had disappeared from my house ever since I had left. Quietly, as not to wake up anyone but to only attract the attention of my dad sitting on our green and gold
couch, I knocked on the thick, wooden door. I had a feeling that my father wouldn't open the door after what had happened 3 months ago, when they had first
taken me away. To my amazement, my dad had opened the door and hugged me like he knew I had been coming. I told him, “Let’s save the celebrating for once I
get in.” After I closed the door behind me, my whole family woke up and hugged me. At that moment, I knew that the happiness would wake up from its long
dark sleep.
