Memoir 2: Adulthood
It was a cold night. The British were destroying us and the chances of
winning this war were very slim. We lost several of our previous battles and
hopes were fading away. Four days ago General George Washington convened a
Council of War to talk about our options. We were going to attack the British at
Trenton, New Jersey.
It was December 26th, 1776 and I was about to turn 26 years old in five
days. I wasn’t ready to die and I was really nervous about this battle. This was
going to be my first battle and now I’m going to put my skills to the test. We
crossed the McConkey Crossing on Christmas night the night was cold and windy.
“I’m scared Jerry,” I whispered to my best friend since 4th grade.
“Don’t worry I’m scared, too,” he replied.
Finally we crossed the river and began our ten mile walk. There were two
other American forces that were supposed to meet us at Trento. My feet were
numb as well as my hands. We got to our position and one of the other forces
were in their position as well. The British were sleeping and it was the perfect
time to attack them. The other force had to block any British soldiers that tried to
escape.
General George Washington gave us the signal. A chill went down my spine
and the gunshots started to go off. I knew that Jerry had my back and I had his
back too. Colonel Rall was in a warehouse and that’s where I was heading.
“Jerry! Let’s attack the warehouse!” I shouted over the roar of gunshots.
Jerry nodded and followed me to the warehouse. We were trudging to the
warehouse and I was focused on getting to the door. The window opened and I
stopped abruptly and closed my eyes.
Bam! For a minute I thought I died but fortunately Jerry shot him before he
got me.
“Come on! Let’s do it!” He yelled. We got to the door and Jerry went in
front. There were two enemy targets in the aisle. I shot one and Bob shot the
other. There were four doors two on each side.
“Check the left side and I’ll check the right side” Jerry told me.
My heart started to beat faster and faster. I kicked the door open and I
found nothing but bunk beds.
“Clear!” I yelled.
“Clear!” Jerry shouted.
I saw the British flag and I ripped it apart. Jerry went to clear his other
room.
Bam!
“Jerry!” I yelled. When I looked down the aisle and I saw my best friend on
the floor. Smoke was coming out of his arm. A British soldier came out of the
room on the right and I shot him. He lay down on the floor smoked. I slowly
moved down the aisle. My hands started to sweat and they were shaking. Jerry
told me through hand signals that there were two enemies in the left room. I
walked down the aisle with my back against the left wall. Jerry struggled to get up
but he couldn’t.
“I got your back” he mouthed. I didn’t expect him to have my back cause of
his bad condition. On a count of three I ran full speed into the room and jumped
while my momentum was taking me to the left. There was two of the British
enemies and I saw the pale face of Colonel Rall. I pointed my gun to his face and
pulled the trigger. Bam! I fell to the ground and I noticed that blood was coming
out of my left leg.
I heard another gunshot and the second British soldier that shot me was
dead. I couldn’t really hear and I was quickly fainting. All I remember was friendly
soldiers coming in to get me and Jerry. We won that battle that day. The battle of
Trenton.
